A Florida couple was killed in a single vehicle accident Monday afternoon in Auburn, according to Lee County Coroner Bill Harris.
At around 1:20 p.m. CDT, Auburn police received reports on an accident near the 55 mile marker on Interstate 85. When police arrived at scene, they found a three-axle Freightliner truck that had left the roadway and struck a tree.
The driver of the truck, Ruth P. Mercer and her passenger, Luther J. Mercer, both of Milton, Fla., had critical injuries and had to be extricated from the vehicle.
60-year-old Ruth Mercer was airlifted to The Medical Center in Columbus by Lifesaver helicopter and pronounced dead upon arrival at the emergency room at 2:25 p.m.
Her husband, 65-year-old Luther Mercer, was rushed by ambulance to the East Alabama Medical Center where he died from his injuries at 4:11 p.m.
The cause of the accident is still under investigation by the Auburn police, but preliminary findings according to witnesses seem to indicate that the truck just veered to the left and crossed all lanes before leaving the roadway, striking the tree.
Alcohol was not a factor in the accident and there were no other vehicles involved. The accident remains under investigation by the Auburn Police and the Lee County Coroner’s Office.
