Beginning Wednesday, the faculty and students of Dexter Elementary School on Fort Benning will celebrate the school’s 40th anniversary and honor the man for whom the facility is named.
Throughout the week, students will take part in activities to learn about Dexter’s life to include learning about the culture and geography of Vietnam where Maj. Herbert J. Dexter served, participating in “boot camp” activities simulating Dexter’s basic training experiences and exploring the history of the school's mascot.
Students will also have the chance to check out Dexter's military medals, learn airborne commands and practice parachute landing techniques.
Activities will culminate with a ceremony at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6, which will be attended by several members of Dexter’s family. Retired Lt. Col. Thomas Carlisle will be the guest speaker.
