Memorial ceremony set for today for Fort Benning soldier killed in Iraq

The soldiers of the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division will hold a memorial ceremony today in Iraq for one of their own.

The Department of Defense announced Tuesday the death of Staff Sgt. Briand T. Williams, 25, of Sparks, Ga. Williams was killed Sunday in Numaniyah, Iraq, of injuries suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire.

The brigade's public affairs officer, Capt. Charles Barrett, told the Ledger-Enquirer through an email that the unit will come together at some point today to reflect on their loss and remember their brother in arms.

Williams was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 10th Field Artillery Regiment, 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division in September 2007. The 3rd HBCT deployed to Iraq in October.

Williams joined the Army in June 2002 and had three previous deployments.

He was promoted to staff sergeant about two weeks ago, according to Fort Benning public affairs.
