Will Hurricane Debby affect Columbus’ back-to-school forecast? Here’s the latest
It’s unfortunate that Hurricane Debby coincides with the first day of school, but it looks like it shouldn’t be too impactful, besides a little bit of wind and, of course, the heat.
The Weather Channel predicts a high of 95℉ on Thursday, August 8, but as any good Southerner knows, it’s not the heat that gets you, it’s the humidity.
The back-to-schoolers will really feel all of the 60% humidity, but Debby will provide a little bit of a breeze, with winds reaching around 10 to 15 mph.
Although the before-school sun exposure should be manageable for the kids, parents shouldn’t forget sunscreen as the UV index will be extremely high.
Chances of rain will increase as the day goes on and it will probably be mostly cloudy on the walk home from the bus stop. The chances of rain go from 5% during the day to 24% in the evening, so an umbrella might be a good precaution, depending on when your child’s school lets out.
You can expect more of the same on Friday with a high of 94℉ and a low of 73℉ at night. There won’t be as much wind, which could make the humidity level of 68% feel downright oppressive.
Back-to-school in Georgia is still a shorts and short-sleeve occasion, but it might be a good idea to send the kids to school with an umbrella and sunscreen, just in case.
