Donations to Haiti’s earthquake relief effort can be claimed on 2009 tax returns, the Internal Revenue Service said.
People who itemize their 2009 tax returns can claim the special tax relief provision if the charitable donation was made after Jan. 11 and before March 1.
Donations made by text message, check, credit and debit card qualify, the IRS said.
The new provision applies to cash only, not property donations, and the contribution must specifically be for the relief of victims of the Jan. 12 earthquake.
