Carlos Demetri Rodriguez, initially charged with murder in connection with the death of Spc. Eric Salazar, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter on Thursday.
Rodriguez, 22, was sentenced to 15 years in prison, followed by 10 on probation, on charges of voluntary manslaughter, possession of a knife during the commission of a crime and two counts of aggravated assault, said Assistant District Attorney Michael Craig.
“I feel a sense of closure,” Craig said. “The victim’s family was aware of the plea. They all understand the state’s position in the case. I just hope there’s some sense of closure, and they can move on with their lives.”
Salazar went to Northwood Apartments, 5000 Armour Road, on Nov. 10, 2008, with a fellow soldier and the woman he was to marry the next day. Rodriguez was at the apartment, and an argument began between him and the woman, who is the mother of Rodriguez’ child, Craig said.
