A former Ohio police officer was found dead at his Phenix City apartment today when officers tried to serve a warrant for his arrest on a murder charge, authorities said.
Between 2:30 - 3 p.m. CST, officers approached the home of Tommy Swint, 43, at Steeple Crest Luxury Apartment, 5001 River Chase Drive, said Lee County Capt. Van Jackson.
“They went there to execute a fugitive from justice arrest warrant and a search warrant,” Jackson said.
The captain added that his office had been asked by Dayton, Ohio, law enforcement authorities to assist with the investigation of Swint, who had been indicted for a 1991 unsolved homicide.

“Once officers arrived at the scene, they heard what they thought was an apparent gunshot,” Jackson said.
They entered the apartment, listed in court records as No. 117, and found the man later identified as Swint suffering from an apparent gunshot wound. Officers checked for vital signs and found none, the captain said.
Authorities secured the scene and Jackson called in the Alabama Bureau of Investigation for an investigation.
“The case has now been turned over to them,” Jackson said.
