Did bacon save woman’s life? Storm topples tree, destroys Columbus house as family escapes

David Goins said his wife credits the bacon she was cooking Sunday evening in their Columbus home with saving her life.

She was sitting on the couch in the living room of their Myrick Drive house before heading to the kitchen when she heard a “ding” indicating the bacon was ready.

Then, as the family stood in the kitchen while making dinner, they heard a loud noise amid the storm that brought heavy rain, thunder and lightning to the Columbus area, leaving tree branches and other debris littering the roads, as well as power outages, in the Chattahoochee Valley.

“I heard a large explosion, sounded like a shotgun or louder actually, and then when we turned around we noticed that there was a (pine) tree in our living room,” Goins told the Ledger-Enquirer. “We were just blessed that we weren’t in there.”

Goins said his family is fine, but the house isn’t able to be lived in at this time. He said the air conditioner that was in the attic is now on his living room floor along with broken electrical lines.

Goins also said all the trusses in the main living area are broken. Insurance should cover everything, he said, but he expects they will be out of their home for six months.

On the inside of the house, the living room is essentially walled off by the collapsed ceiling and insulation. In the kitchen, part of the ceiling is collapsed, and insulation covers part of the floor and one of the countertops.

On the other countertop sits plates full of bacon and french toast that the family never got around to eating after the disaster.

As of late Monday afternoon, Georgia Power reported several dozen customers in Columbus still were without power.
