The hearing on a murder charge against Robert Joseph Cantelli Jr. has been continued until 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Cantelli, 31, of Phenix City, is charged with murder and firearm possession in the death of a Columbus man. He appeared in Columbus Recorder's Court this morning and declined representation by a public defender. The judge said the case would continue Wednesday so Cantelli can find private counsel.
Joshua Hill of Columbus was found dead with a gunshot wound to the head in the back seat of an SUV Cantelli was driving Thursday, according to a Columbus police report. The crime occurred Thursday afternoon at 12th Avenue and 19th Street in Columbus, police said. Sometime after the shooting, Cantelli led Columbus police on a chase that began in Columbus and ended at the bottom of a ravine near the intersection of Seale Road and U.S. 280 in Phenix City.
Hill’s body was discovered in the back seat of the wrecked vehicle.
