'Extreme Makeover: Home Edition' update: Interior design work slated for Friday

If all goes as planned, the builders at the "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" site in Pine Mountain Valley will turn the house keys over to the interior design team at 2 p.m. Friday.

At least that's the goal, according to Dan Goodin, vice president of sales and marketing for Nationwide Custom Homes.

"The deadline's almost here and folks are pretty tired," Goodin said.

The Virginia-based company is leading the project with its parent company, Palm Harbor Homes, plus local builders and community volunteers.

Our celebrity sighting for today: "Extreme Makeover" on-screen personality Paul DiMeo, who was working on the handicap-accessible playground in the backyard.

The 4,155-square-foot modular home — constructed of pre-made sections — will go to the four-member Williams family. Dad Jeremy, who coaches football at Greenville High School, has Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The family’s 6-year-old son, Jacob, has spina bifida.

Volunteers at the construction site were in good spirits on Thursday. "When they finish it, it's going to be a gorgeous home," said Jan Springer, 55, of Opelika.

Springer, joined by some of her co-workers from Synovus, worked the 6 a.m.-1 p.m. volunteer shift on Thursday and performed duties like cleaning the VIP tent and helping with the food offered on site.

"We've gone from computers to catering," she said.

The public viewing area is open from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. until Saturday. Get more details by clicking on the link that accompanies this page.

There's a blood drive at the spectator parking lot 1:30-6:30 p.m. Friday.
