Hardaway High, Columbus High, Kendrick High and Chattahoochee County High win awards in state academic decathlon
Four local high schools won awards in the Georgia Academic Decathlon last week.
Hardaway High, Columbus High and Kendrick High in Muscogee County and Chattahoochee County High in Chattahoochee County competed in the event, held February 26 and 27 at Berkmar High in Gwinnett County.
During the competition, students were tested in seven content areas: economics, art, language and literature, mathematics, science, music and Written Super Quiz. In addition, students earned points individually in three communication events: public speaking, a personal interview, and a written essay.
Hardaway High's team was named first runner-up in the oral Super Quiz portion of the competition. Student Benjamin Merva was named the Silver Overall Winner in the Scholastic category; he also won Gold in Economics, Silver in Art, Bronze in Science, and Bronze in the Written Super Quiz. Students Ashley Lee and Chad Fry both won Gold in Speech and were selected to give their speeches at the award banquet.
Columbus High's team was named first runner-up in Division II and will represent Georgia in the United States Academic Decathlon Medium School National Online Competition. Student Latasha Neal won Silver in Music and Bronze in Interview; Student Michael Skillern won Silver in Interview and Bronze in Speech; Student Kelsey Tjen won Bronze in Math; and Student Brad Laney won Gold in Math.
Kendrick High's team placed eighth among Division II schools. Student Talley Jordan won Gold in Language and Literature and Silver in Math. Student Zia Green won Silver in Interview, and Student Lauren Great won Silver in Interview.
Chattahoochee County High was named second runner-up among Division II schools. They also will represent Georgia in the United States Academic Decathlon Small School Online Competition.
The competition included more than 200 high school students from 23 high schools and was sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators.
