Fort Benning will hold a volunteer appreciation ceremony and reception today for members of the post's volunteer force.
Weather permitting, the event will be held on the lawn of Riverside, the commanding general's quarters, at 5 p.m.
During the ceremony, volunteers will present a symbolic check in the amount of $1,901,895.30 to Maj. Gen. Michael Ferriter, Fort Benning's commanding general.
The check is intended to represent the post's estimated savings last year by using more than 2,300 Fort Benning volunteers who donated more than 91,200 hours to various projects around the installation.
National Volunteer Week began in 1974, when President Richard Nixon signed an executive order establishing an annual celebration of volunteering. Every president since has signed a proclamation promoting the week.
In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be conducted at the Fort Benning Conference Center.
