Troup officials dedicate new road to musician Chips Moman

A new roadway in Troup County has been dedicated to a local resident renowned for his contributions to rock 'n' roll and country music.

Grammy award winner Chips Moman, who was born and raised in LaGrange, is known as a legendary music producer who created hit songs for Aretha Franklin such as "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man" and B.J. Thomas' "(Hey, Won’t You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song." He also produced songs for Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash.

Today Moman lives in Troup County. He has retired to his family farm near West Point Lake.

On Friday, the Troup County Commission voted to name the new Pegasus Parkway Extension/South Loop Bypass "Chips Moman Highway." Once the highway is finished in 2012 it will be a 6.1-mile, two-lane highway connecting Whitesville and Roanoke roads.

The $19.1 million highway, which is being paid for with stimulus funds, passes Moman's Troup County home.

"Chips Moman has dedicated his life to song and has gifted the world with some of its most remarkable and memorable music," Troup County Commission Chairman Ricky Wolfe said said in a statement. "His musical contributions will be enjoyed throughout the world for years to come. We are honored to recognize him today."
