Street at Fort Valley State named for Ira Hicks

University Boulevard, which runs along the southwest side of Fort Valley State University, is now Ira Hicks Boulevard.

Hicks was recently given the honor at a special service in the school's Anna L. Lumpkin Auditorium.

Hicks, 82, served as a Peach County Commissioner from 1989-2000 and was the board's chairman his last term. He is a former teacher of vocational agriculture at Fort Valley State.

Hicks told people at the ceremony, "service is the rent that one pays for living."
