UAB hospital ranked as one of nation's best

The University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital drew a top 50 ranking in 11 different areas in a report by "U.S. News & World Report" magazine.

The magazine evaluated 4,852 U. S. Hospitals.

The hospital's rheumatology program ranked 11th and its care of kidney disorders ranked 13th.

Also in the top 20 was its gynecology program.

The hospital ranked 24th in geriatrics, pulmonary care and urology.

Heart surgery and neurosurgery both ranked No. 31 with cancer at No. 39, ear nose and throat at No. 42 and gastroenterology at No. 42.

The rankings appear in the magazine which goes on sale Tuesday.
