Troup native and film star back in town this weekend

Troup County native Elijah Kelley, who is best known for his appearance in the films “Hairspray” and “Take the Lead,” will be back in his hometown Sunday to celebrate his birthday and the community where he grew up.

Kelley, 23, currently lives in Los Angeles is from LaGrange and attended Troup High School. He will hold an event Sunday at Callaway Stadium to celebrate the upcoming school year (and his birthday) and spotlight outstanding community service, according to a press release.

The Back to School Bash will feature live performances by Kelley and special guests including motivational speakers. Doors will open at 5 p.m. and the event will begin at 6 p.m.

The entire event will be used in an upcoming reality TV show called “Hometown Heroes.” The show plans to honor local residents who are everyday heroes in their own community.

According to the press release, officials are still in search of heroes and submission can be sent to myhometownhero@gmail.com by July 30.

Organizers are asking participants to donate $7 to attend the event. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Elijah Kelley Foundation Fund, which has previously donated money to Callaway Elementary School in Troup County and awarded scholarship funds to an area student.
