Man pleads guilty to stealing more than $450,000 from government

William Roland Smith, 60, of Prattville, Ala. plead guilty in federal court Thursday to stealing more than $450,000 from the government.

The plea was announced by Leura G. Canary, United States Attorney for the Middle District of Alabama.

He plead guilty before United States Magistrate Judge Charles S. Coody to a one-count felony information charging him with theft of government property.

Smith's father Robert Smith was a retired federal employee residing in Montgomery, Ala. He received monthly pension benefits from the United States which the government deposited directly into a joint bank account held by father and son.

The father died in June, 1994 but William Smith continued to collect payments totaling $452,635.50 until August, 2006.

He will be sentenced this fall.
