Soldiers return to Fort Benning from Iraq

The airplane carrying the first wave of soldiers being redeployed from Iraq to Fort Benning touched down at Lawson Army Airfield at 1:48 a..m. today.

Approximately 200 soldiers of the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division were on board. About another 400 should return this month and by the end of October that number should be around 3,000.

Many friends and fans waited for the troops inside Freedom Hall. The parents of SPC. Christopher Alderman were among them.

"I don't care if I were to lose my job. Nothing could keep me from being here," said Alan Alderman, a truck driver and former soldier.

He drove from Round Rock, Texas along with his wife Jan.

"I have Christopher's motorcycle in the back of my pickup," he said.

The soldier said he was glad to be back and was looking forward to riding the motorcycle.
