Columbus crime: Man accused of choking woman arrested, found with suspected drugs at jail

A Columbus man accused of choking a woman with a pipe had suspected drugs on him when he was searched at the Muscogee County Jail, police said.

Bennie Ingram Jr., 49, is accused of waiting for a 47-year-old woman when she arrived at her Bernard Drive home around 1:40 a.m. Saturday. He started arguing with her before hitting her and forcing her to the ground, reports state.

The suspect then began to choke the woman with a pipe, police said.

The woman escaped and ran to a Garden Drive home for help. The suspect followed with the pipe and tried to get inside the house twice, reports state.When police arrived, the suspect was still in the area. He threw down the pipe and walked away, though officers arrested him and took him to jail, police report.

Deputies searched the suspect at the jail and found five suspected crack cocaine rocks valued at $85, reports state.

Ingram faces charges including aggravated assault, burglary and drug counts, police said.
