A captain with Columbus Fire & EMS died in a one-vehicle wreck late Sunday after his car went off the road and burst into flames, authorities said.
Robert Fletcher Floyd, 40, of Seale, Ala., was driving a Lincoln Towncar near County Road 24 and Avalon Circle in Russell County when it appears he lost control of the car, said Coroner Arthur Sumbry Jr.
The car left the road and entered a ditch, striking several trees before returning to the road. It then burst into flames and was completely engulfed in fire, Sumbry said.
Floyd was pronounced dead at 11:35 p.m. No autopsy is planned, though his blood has been sent to a lab for testing, the coroner said.
Floyd served at the Brown Avenue fire station, authorities said.
