Council votes to fire Parks and Recreation Director Tony Adams for insubordination

Embattled Columbus Parks and Recreation director Tony Adams was terminated by a 6-3 vote of council today during an emotionally charged debate that lasted more than two hours.

The recommendation to fire Adams came from City Manager Isaiah Hugley, who said Adams repeatedly denied signing a contract with Nike for a city-run youth basketball team that Adams coached.

Councilors Red McDaniel, Skip Henderson, Mike Baker, Wayne Anthony, Gary Allen and Glen Davis voted for the termination, which had to come before council according to the city charter. Evelyn Pugh, Julius Hunter and Mimi Woodson voted against it. Pops Barnes was not present.

Adams and two others have been arrested and charged with felony misappropriation of more than $200,000 in money connected to a Nike-sponsored city youth basketball team.
