Councilor Barnes was ill for Tuesday's vote on Adams

Columbus Councilor Jerry "Pops" Barnes was ill Tuesday, forcing him to miss the vote to fire Columbus Parks and Recreation Director Tony Adams.

Before the 5:30 p.m. meeting at the Government Center, Barnes called the Clerk of Council's office and informed them about his illness.

During the meeting, the nine members present voted 6-3 to dismiss Adams from the position. Voting for the action were Councilors Berry "Skip" Henderson, Mike Baker, Gary Allen, Glenn Davis, C.E. "Red" McDaniel and Wayne Anthony. Councilors Evelyn "Mimi" Woodson, Evelyn Turner Pugh and Julius Hunter opposed the action.

Adams' firing was effective immediately.

Barnes did not return a phone call seeking comment about the vote.

City Manager Isaiah Hugley said Adams was not truthful and honest during the audit and police investigation that led to charges of misappropriating more than $200,00 for a Nike-sponsored team operated in Columbus.
