Lee County crime: Tuskegee man faces attempted murder charge in shooting

A Tuskegee, Ala., man accused of shooting a former girlfriend in the face now faces a charge of attempted murder, Lee County authorities said.

Cedrick Leon Dawkins, 28, was arrested around 3:30 p.m. CDT Tuesday, reports state. According to Lee County Sheriff’s Capt. Van Jackson, deputies responded to a shooting at an Auburn, Ala., home in the 900 block of Lee Road 61 at 6 p.m. CDT Sept. 25. They found a 28-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to her face.

The woman was taken to the East Alabama Medical Center, where she was treated and released, Jackson said.

Deputies found Dawkins in the 1800 block of Lee Road 61. It appeared he had a self-inflicted gunshot to his mouth, the captain added.

“The investigation revealed that (the woman) and Dawkins, who had previously been involved in a dating relationship, had gotten into a verbal argument which led to Dawkins pulling a small caliber handgun and shooting (her) before exiting the home and shooting himself,” Jackson says in a release.

Dawkins was treated at the East Alabama Medical Center and later the University of Alabama in Birmingham hospital. He’s now at the Lee County Detention Center under a $25,000 bond, Jackson said.
