Firefighters carry 3 children from apartment fire; 1 arrested in connection with blaze

Firefighters carried three small children from an apartment fire Thursday night, stopping the small fire a minute after arriving, fire officials said.

It appeared that no one was seriously injured in the blaze, though police said a man was arrested in connection to the fire.

Columbus Fire & EMS responded to Elizabeth Canty Apartments, 1990 Cusseta Road, at 7:27 p.m. Arriving six minutes later, a crew of firefighters entered the home and stopped the kitchen fire in a minute, said Battalion Chief Bobby Dutton.

Another crew followed the first, helping carry three unconscious children from the area, the chief added.

Dutton said the children, aged 1 to 4 years, likely had smoke inhalation. All were taken to the hospital.

“They were all found in bedrooms, away from the fire. These guys did a jam-up job,” Dutton said of his firefighters.

Around 8 p.m., a police officer led a man away from the area in handcuffs. An officer confirmed that the arrest was connected to the fire.
