Columbus fire: Father charged with reckless conduct in connection with Elizabeth Canty fire

A Columbus father was arrested in connection with a Thursday night fire at Elizabeth Canty Apartments that sent his three children to the hospital.

Curtis McGhee, 22, was charged with three counts of reckless conduct after he allegedly started supper on the stove and then left, starting a fire, according to police and fire officials.

Columbus Fire & EMS responded to the fire at the apartments at around 7:30 p.m. A crew of firefighters entered the home and stopped the kitchen fire within a minute.

Another crew followed the first and helped carry three unconscious children, ages two, three and five, from the area. According to police reports, all three children were transported to the hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation.

McGhee was led away from the scene of the fire in handcuffs and transported to the Muscogee County Jail.
