A Union Pacific train collided with a Saturn Ion in Opelika, Ala., Monday afternoon, police said.
The 53-year-old female driver of the car was alert and conscious afterward, said Capt. Allan Elkins.
The driver tried to cross the train tracks between South and North Railroad avenues at 12:37 p.m. CDT as the 7,000-foot long, 400-ton train headed westbound passed by, Elkins said.
“The two collided on the tracks,” he added. “The car’s totalled. The train stopped roughly a block away in distance.”
Elkins said the traffic signals, lights and bars were functioning at the time of the collision.
