Suspect tries to grab woman’s purse, gets caught by her boyfriend

A suspect in a Tuesday night purse snatching was chased down and caught by the woman’s boyfriend, police said.

The suspect, identified by police as Columbus Diversion Center resident Frederick Shavers, 29, faces charges in connection to a robbery in the 2500 block of 10th Street just after 9 p.m., said Sgt. Joseph Hart.

The suspect may also be tied to an attempted purse snatching outside of Bargain Town on Frances Street, though Hart said no charges have been filed in that case.

According to Hart, someone tried to grab a woman’s purse outside of Bargain Town, 2326 Frances St., around 9 p.m., though he failed. Moments later, some five blocks away, a suspect grabbed a woman’s purse.

The woman’s boyfriend was with her, however, and he chased down the suspect and kept him at the scene until officers arrived, Hart said.

Shavers is charged with robbery, obstruction of a law enforcement officer and battery with physical harm, jail records state.
