A Columbus man pleaded guilty to cruelty to children in Muscogee County Superior Court on Wednesday.
Bryan Sherman, 33, was sentenced to a year in prison, followed by nine on probation, for the July 24 incident that left a 1-year-old boy with burns from hot water.
Assistant Solicitor George Lipscomb, who prosecuted the case, told Chief Judge John Allen that Sherman left the boy along with a 4-year-old in the bathroom as he went to get plastic balls for them to play with. When he returned, the younger child was screaming because of the hot water.
“Once he discovered the burns, he gave the child Benadryl and put him to bed for the night,” Lipscomb said.
When another adult saw the burns the next day, the child was taken to a burn center in Augusta, the prosecutor added.
The child has since made a “miraculous” recovery, Lipscomb said.
