Due to a gas leak at Eddy Middle School, students were moved from the middle school to South Columbus Elementary today.
Parents were contacted via the district's Blackboard Connect system to check-out and pick up their child at the South Columbus Elementary campus, Muscogee County School District's director of communications Valerie Fuller wrote in an email.
The district is not running buses early, so that students will not be sent home to empty houses. Students will ride home on buses at the regular dismissal time, 4:05 p.m.
Lunch was served to students at South Columbus.
Fuller said the leak came from a old pipe that had been in use since the 1960s, when the school was built. Due to many freezes over the years, as well as corrosion, the pipe shifted and cracked.
She said the district's Plant Services department has located one leak, but is still working on locating a second leak, as well as working on repairs.
