If your usual trash day falls on a Monday, your routine pick up will be disrupted by Labor Day on Sept. 2.

Americans have been celebrating Labor Day on the first Monday in September since 1882, so you know that there will be no curbside trash, recycling or yard waste pick up that day.

For those who normally have Monday collection:

  • Trash collection, recycling and yard waste normally scheduled for Monday will be collected on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2024.

  • All city offices will be closed as well, which falls in line with the spirit of the holiday that has its roots in the 19th century labor movement in the United States.

The Labor Day holiday was first conceptualized as a parade, which was organized in New York City by the Central Labor Union and the Knights of Labor.

Over 10,000 workers marched from City Hall to Union Square, taking unpaid leave off to participate. The holiday was established to honor American workers and their contributions to the national economy and overall prosperity of the country.

While you’re enjoying the unofficial last days of summer, you can thank a laborer for the time off.
