Councilors bid farewell to Wetherington, Anthony and Hunter

Members of Columbus Council said farewell to Mayor Jim Wetherington and fellow councilors Wayne Anthony and Julius Hunter Jr. during their last official meeting Tuesday.

Wetherington didn’t seek re-election, Anthony failed in his bid for the mayor’s office and Hunter was denied a fourth term by voters in Council District 3.

With his wife Shirley standing by his side, Wetherington was thanked by councilors for his service as mayor and public safety director before Councilor C.E. “Red McDaniel presented him a silver serving platter.

An avid tennis player, Hunter was joined by wife Saundra Hunter, director of Metra Transit System, as he was presented a tennis racket.

Anthony, an at-large councilor, was given a clock.

Mayor-elect Teresa Tomlinson watched the farewells from council chambers. Anthony will be replaced by Judy Thomas and Hunter will turn over his district to mortician Bruce Huff, who won by a large margin in the Nov. 30 runoff.
