Columbus police say a woman was raped on the Riverwalk Wednesday night.
The 45-year-old was on Fourth Avenue near 35th Street around 9 p.m. when the suspect approached her, Lt. John McMichael said.
“He told her he would shoot her if she didn’t go with him,” the lieutenant added.
The suspect didn’t display a weapon, though the woman followed him to First Avenue where they accessed the Riverwalk. The suspect then raped the woman on a bench, McMichael said.
“She had a weapon that she tried to use in her defense, but he took it away,” McMichael said.
At some point, the suspect struck the woman with a tree limb he’d picked up. Afterward, he walked away and the woman went to a nearby gas station where she called police. She was taken to The Medical Center for treatment, McMichael said.
The suspect is a black man in his 20s, slender and 6-foot tall. He wore a dark coat, blue sweatpants and black high-top shoes. He had a bowl-type haircut, McMichael said.
