An Opelika, Ala., man faces DUI charges after police say he collided with a motorcyclist Sunday and then fled the scene.
Mario Ernesto Fuentes, 31, faces charges in connection with the 12:20 p.m. wreck in Valley, Ala., that sent a 54-year-old man to the hospital, said Valley Police Maj. Mike Reynolds.
According to Reynolds, the motorcyclist and the suspect were driving south on U.S. 29 when the suspect, in a blue Ford Econoline, moved from his lane and into the motorcycle. The van kept going, and police found the motorcyclist with severe injuries when they arrived at U.S. 29 and Cusseta Road.
The motorcyclist was Life Flighted to The Medical Center and later taken to The University of Alabama in Birmingham in critical condition, Reynolds said.
About 30 minutes after the wreck, officers learned that the van was near County Road 388 and headed back to Valley. They stopped the van at U.S. 29 and the Fairfax Bypass and arrested the suspect, the major said.
Fuentes faces charges of DUI, leaving the scene of an accident and second-degree assault, Reynolds said.
