Columbus homicide detectives are investigating this evening what they called a suspicious death under the Oglethorpe Bridge near Golden Park. A large area was cordoned off with police tape sometime around 5 p.m., witnesses said, and a dead body could be seen sitting in the front seat of a green Ford Expedition.

Police Chief Ricky Boren joined several high-ranking officers at the scene and said in a brief interview that a man in the vehicle had apparently been shot in the head. He said no weapon had been recovered from the vehicle.

Two young men who appeared distraught were taken away from the scene in the back of a police car, though they were not wearing handcuffs.

Neighbors recalled hearing a scream shortly before 5 p.m.
