AUBURN, Ala. — No. 23 Auburn salvaged a win against No. 7 Arizona State on Sunday, using a four-run eighth to rally for a 10-8 victory at Plainsman Park.
Casey McElroy hit a two-out, two-run double to tie things at 8 in the eighth. Dan Gamache followed with a double that left fielder Matt Newman leaped to catch for a second at the base of the wall before dropping it as he fell to the ground.
Zach Blatt pitched two scoreless innings for the win as the Tigers (11-5) snapped a five-game losing streak to the Sun Devils (11-3).
McElroy, who was 3-for-5, and Gamache both drove in three runs.
Starter Derek Varnadore didn't figure in the decision after allowing six runs on five hits in six innings.
Auburn is back in action Tuesday against Alabama at Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery in the Capital City Classic. First pitch is 8 p.m. ET.
