Troup County: Juvenile accidentally shoots self, charged with burglary

A juvenile who claimed another boy shot him in the foot was later charged with burglary and making a false report, Troup County sheriff’s said.

Deputies responded to a shooting on Mallory Drive, in LaGrange, around 9:15 a.m. Thursday, where they met with the male juvenile — later determined to be a burglary suspect — who blamed a second boy for shooting him in the foot. Authorities began their investigation and learned that the shooting victim had been seen about two hours earlier at the Mallory Drive home acting suspicious, Sgt. Chad Mann said.

Deputies checked the home and found that it had been burglarized. They contacted the owner, who wasn’t there, and got permission to go inside and continue investigating, Mann added.

Investigators then found the juvenile who’d been accused of shooting the suspect and discovered that he’d been sleeping at his rural Troup County home at the time of the shooting. Determining that he wasn’t involved, deputies confronted the suspect, who told them he accidentally shot himself in the foot after breaking into the Mallory Drive home and stealing a .22-caliber rifle, Mann said.
