A Phenix City man police say got in a car accident Saturday afternoon faces charges of obstructing an officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and DUI, reports state.
Columbus police responded to an accident at 24th Street and 13th Avenue at 4:30 p.m., where they saw the suspect, 28-year-old Cody Blount, in the driver’s seat of a truck that had collided with a nearby tree. Blount got out of the truck, checked under the hood and then got back inside the truck, where he began to look for something in the passenger-side floorboard, police said.
The officer told Blount to get out of the vehicle. Blount did and allegedly began running toward 12th Avenue. The officer caught Blount and noticed that he appeared drunk. He tried to put Blount in handcuffs, and Blount allegedly began jerking his arms away, reports state.
Police said they got Blount into the handcuffs and sat him on the curb as they waited for EMS to arrive. However, Blount allegedly tried to stand up three times as he made threats to the officers and emergency personnel. He allegedly remained combative as authorities took him to The Medical Center for treatment.
Officers found a loaded .45-caliber HiPoint JHP in the passenger-side floorboard of the truck Blount drove, reports state.
Blount faces charges of obstruction of an officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, DUI, duty to report an accident involving death/injury/property damage, leaving the scene of an accident, improper lane change, no proof of insurance and no state tag, Muscogee County Jail records state.
