Two dead in Monday's helicopter crash at Fort Benning

Two aviators from Fort Campbell, Ky., were killed Monday afternoon after their  AH-6M helicopter crashed during a  routine training exercise at Fort Benning, a public affairs spokesman confirmed Tuesday.

The names of the soldiers from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment  are being withheld until their relatives can be notified. No other injuries were reported.

"It was a training accident," said Gary Jones, chief public affairs officer on post. "It is currently under investigation."

This week, the soldiers were training with  Fort Benning's 75th Ranger Regiment  and another unit with the Air Force using helicopters and aircraft. The training will run through Aug. 19.

The crash happened at 4:15  p.m., said Sgt. 1st Class Michael Noggle, a public affairs officer at Fort Bragg, N.C.  Army officials declined to disclose the location of the crash.

"Everything is under investigation," Noggle said.
