Army Corps of Engineers employee accidentally killed on Fort Benning

An Army Corps of Engineers employee died Saturday on Fort Benning after a dump truck backed up and struck him near Dixie and 1st Division roads, officials said.

The federal employee, whose name hasn’t been released, was at the site of a road widening project early Saturday afternoon when the accident happened. The death is being investigated, said Billy Birdwell, spokesman with the Corps.

“We do know that he was struck by a dump truck that was backing up,” Birdwell added. “The person that was struck was on foot. He was transported out to Martin Army Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.”

Birdwell said a thorough investigation will begin into the death. Aspects of the road project will now be slowed, though it won’t be completely halted.

“We take all accidents at our work site very seriously,” he added. “We involve a number of safety organizations to ensure accidents like this don’t happen.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family,” Birdwell said. “He was our employee and we consider him a part of our family.”
