Saturday Arbor Day celebration canceled, 'flash mob' tree-planting set for 4 p.m. today

Because of rain Columbus has canceled Saturday's Arbor Day celebration and instead Trees Columbus Inc. has set a "flash mob" tree-planting for 4 p.m. today.

Volunteers will gather at the Lakebottom Park Girl Scout house at 17th Street and 18th Avenue, collect their gear and review instructions for planting more than a dozen seedlings one block east at Cherokee Avenue and 17th Street.

Participants will each get a souvenir T-shirt, the nonprofit says.

The Arbor Day planting had been set for 9:30 a.m. Saturday, but the National Weather Service predicts a 100-percent chance of rain with accumulations of 1 to 2 inches.
