A worker installing cable barriers on the Interstate in Lee County was killed Monday when a vehicle struck him, Lee County Coroner Bill Harris said.
Estaban Leos, 53, of Mississippi died after he was struck about 10 a.m. CST while working in the median of the Interstate, just south of Auburn, Harris added.
According to the coroner, Raymond Stukel of Illinois was driving south when his vehicle veered into the median and struck Leos, who was with several other workers. Stukel’s vehicle then collided with a traffic barrel and a small Bobcat loader before it stopped.
Harris said Alabama State Troopers were on the scene with their vehicle lights on in the construction zone when the wreck happened.
Stukel was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. Leos was pronounced dead from multiple blunt force injuries at the scene, Harris said.
State troopers said the case was under investigation. Once complete, it’ll be handed over to the Lee County District Attorney’s Office.
