It didn't take a stakeout to catch a man stuffing his shorts with meat Sunday at the River Road Piggly-Wiggly, just an alert store worker keeping an eye on the ribeye, Columbus police said.
That employee, Connie Chasteen, told officers she saw a man on aisle No. 8 stuff a pack of ribeye steaks into his shorts about 2 p.m. She asked the fellow to accompany her to the store office, "where a total of six packs of Piggly-Wiggly ribeye steaks were found to be inside Mr. Thomas' shorts," police said of Elmer Thomas, 56, who was charged with felony shoplifting.
The charge was a felony because Thomas had four previous shoplifting arrests, police said.
The six packs of ribeye steaks had a total value of $118.29, officers said.
