Smoke in the air due to scheduled burn on Fort Benning

Smoky conditions in south Columbus today are due to a prescribed burn on Fort Benning, officials say.

Fort Benning public affairs spokesperson Elsie Jackson said they are burning about 400 acres in the Harmony Church and Kelley Hill areas, about a half-mile from Highway 27. The winds shifted and blew the smoke in another direction.

Jackson said the scheduled burn was a "good size," but not the largest the post has ever done.
