Columbus police are investigating the Friday afternoon fatal shooting of a man on Lawyers Lane.

Charles Willis III, 31, died after he was struck by gunfire while in his car at Lawyers Lane and Seventh Street. Police have issued arrest warrants for a suspect on a murder charge, though they have not yet released his name, authorities said.

The shooting happened about 5 p.m. as Willis was stopped in his car with a male passenger, Lt. John McMichael said.

"(Willis) called out to our suspect who was on foot on the street," McMichael added. "The suspect fired into the vehicle."

The passenger managed to find cover, though Willis was struck at least once. The suspect ran from the scene, and Willis was taken to The Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 8:12 p.m. Friday, authorities said.
