Suspect facing murder charge in death of Auburn child

Auburn police have charged a man with capital murder after the death of a child he allegedly abused, authorities said.

Ramiro Delreal-Contreras, 24, remained Monday in the Lee County Detention Center with no bond after 4-year-old Ava Zapata – the daughter of his girlfriend – died Sunday of injuries received last week, Auburn police said.

Authorities became involved late Thursday, when the Lee County County Department of Human Resources notified officers of the possible abuse at an Auburn home. Taken to the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the girl had serious physical injuries.

Delreal-Contreras was taken into custody Thursday in Birmingham, Ala. and charged with first-degree domestic violence assault. The child died Sunday, and Delreal-Contreras’ charge was upgraded Monday to capital murder.
