Find out who's qualified for local and state office

Incumbents in Columbus’ Georgia General Assembly delegation are picking up challengers as qualifying for this year’s elections goes into its second day.

As expected, McDonald’s owner Jack Pezold qualified to challenge District 133 Rep. Kip Smith in the July 31 Republican Primary. Pezold already announced his candidacy.

In District 135, represented by longtime Columbus Democrat and Synovus executive Calvin Smyre, Danny Arencibia qualified as a Republican, challenging Smyre in the Nov. 6 general election. Another November matchup will pit incumbent Democrat Carolyn Hugley against Republican Randy Kitchens.

In District 137, Democrat Debbie Buckner now has two challengers in the July party primary: Travis Chambers, who to Judy Thomas narrowly lost a 2010 runoff for at-large Columbus Council Post 9; and Kuwonna Ingram.
