Former Auburn players Ladarious Phillips and Ed Christian were killed, and current guard Eric Mack is in the hospital.
Ladarious Phillips, a fullback from Handley High School in Roanoke, Ala., played in short-yardage situations as a fullback early in 2011, but his role diminished as the season progressed. Phillips left the team in April.
Ed Christian, a guard from Lowndes High School in Valdosta, Ga., redshirted his freshman season. In September of 2011, he was placed on medical hardship due to injuries stemming from back issues, which ended his career.
Eric Mack, a sophomore guard from Calhoun County High School in St. Matthews, S.C., redshirted in 2010, but he developed into a top backup for Auburn in 2011. Against Samford, Mack saw the first action of his playing career at guard. He was expected to battle for a starting spot on the offensive line this fall.
