Phenix City police charged a man Sunday in connection with the shooting death of 32-year-old Donnie Lee Lewis.
Larry Gene Hill Jr., 29, was charged with one count of murder and booked into the Prentiss L. Griffith Dentention Facility.
Officers said they were investigating a report of a shooting into an occupied dwelling before 6 p.m., and, while canvassing the neighborhood, discovered Lewis’ body at “another residence.”
Witnesses told police the shooting happened about 4 a.m. A news release issued by police said investigators found Lewis’ body at 919 Eighth Avenue.

Police said he had been shot at close range in the chest while sitting in a chair in a storage shed behind the residence. Hill was said to be the boyfriend of the victim’s sister.
Police said they recovered the murder weapon but did not describe it. Lewis’ body was sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy.
