Columbus police have arrested the suspect in the Sunday slaying of a cab driver, reports state.
Sandy Mitchell, 22, was arrested Monday on Fort Benning. He’s charged with murder, armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime in connection with the early Sunday shooting of cab driver Byron Keith Brown, Sgt. Anthony Locey said.
Brown, 58, was shot in the head in his Yellow Cab at Shelby Street and Munson Drive near Benning Hills Elementary School. Muscogee Coroner Bill Thrower pronounced him dead at 4:32 a.m. Sunday.
Locey said military police learned about 9 p.m. Monday that Mitchell was on post. He was found, arrested and then turned over to Columbus police.
Mitchell was interviewed by detectives and then transported to the Muscogee County Jail, Locey said in a release. His Recorder's Court hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
Investigators said Brown had picked up a passenger at the Motel 6 on Victory Drive about 3:50 a.m., some two hours before the shooting.
Detectives said one lead led to another until they were able to identify Mitchell.
