Columbus police: Driver flees checkpoint, leads police chase with 6-year-old in back seat

Officers say they arrested a driver who fled a police checkpoint Sunday and led them on a chase through traffic with a 6-year-old in the back seat.

Police said Dameron Givens ran three stop signs and ignored a fourth traffic-control device that they did not specify in their report of the chase that happened about 2 p.m. Saturday.

Officers blocked the driver's door of Givens' Buick LeSabre and drew their guns when finally they caught him on Talley Avenue, they said. They smelled burned marijuana in his car and asked him to consent to a urine test, they said.

They said the 6-year-old was not wearing a seatbelt and was falling over the Buick's back seat.

Givens was charged with three stop-sign violations, a fourth traffic device offense, reckless driving, driving with a suspended license, and breaking the child restraint law, police said.
